Meekness and Rest

Matthew 5:5

Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.

Psalm 37:7-11

Be still before the Lord
    and wait patiently for him;
do not fret when people succeed in their ways,

    when they carry out their wicked schemes.

Refrain from anger and turn from wrath;
    do not fret—it leads only to evil.
For those who are evil will be destroyed,

    but those who hope in the Lord will inherit the land.
10 A little while, and the wicked will be no more;
    though you look for them, they will not be found.
11 But the meek will inherit the land
     and enjoy peace and prosperity.

Matthew 11:28-30

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.  Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.  For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

Prayer

       Lord, make me childlike.  Deliver me from the urge to compete with another for place or prestige or position.  I desire simplicity and meekness.  Deliver me from pose and pretense.  Forgive me for thinking of myself.  Help be to forget myself and find my true peace in You.  I humble myself before You.  Lay upon me Your easy yoke of self-forgetfulness that through it I may find rest.  Amen.
