Why Do We Buy That? My Ancestry
Romans 6:3-8, Colossians 2:9-15, and 1 John 3:1-2
“You are the sum of what you have done!” This proverb seems to seal our fate that our past now determines our lives. But this Sunday we hear about a different heritage that can become ours when we choose Jesus. Our lives are determined by our past, yes, but it is the new past Jesus gives us! We celebrate All Saints Sunday and remember that those who have died are alive, living out a new future given to them by their Jesus-given ancestry!

Why Do We Buy That? – Acting Out

    James 2:14-19, 24

Jesus-followers don’t just sit around all day enjoying their personal relationship with Jesus. They do that while “on the road.” We live out our faith as we go and do. This Sunday we’ll learn how the Methodist Method includes growing by doing, or, put with a cliche, practice makes perfect! Teaser: There will also be treats!

Why Do We Buy That? – Wanting It All
    Romans 12:1-2
Have you noticed how you’ve subtly become addicted to wanting more...better...that next thing? It’s surprising just how sneakily that seeps into our lives! The way to counter the consumption of consumptionism is to live out your salvation every day. That means applying how you make Jesus your Lord not just when you become a Christian, but continually. This Sunday we’re learning to kneel before our Lord each and every day.

Why Do We Buy That? – End with Forgiveness
Ephesians 4:17-32 Being in relationships means dealing with the mess that other people dish out on us. It’s hard, even when it’s people we love. But our response is determined not by what they do, but by who rules inside of us. This Sunday we’ll re-frame retaliation and hear Jesus’ calling to forgive. Trust me, if you live in today’s culture, you need to hear this message!

Why Do We Buy That? – Power in Numbers
    Ephesians 4:1-16 World Communion Day
It’s easy to break a single stick. Yet when you hold a bunch of sticks, it is very hard to break them all together. Do you feel like you are cracking and splintering? Then you need to join the rest of the “sticks” this Sunday at worship. It’s World Communion Sunday and we’re celebrating how we have the Body of Christ as Jesus’ gift of support for us!

Why Do We Buy That? – Inner Strength
Isaiah 40:28-31, 41:10 Feeling overwhelmed and hopeless is becoming quite common. We struggle with more than we can handle. Do you feel at your wits’–and rope’s–end? Come this Sunday and hear the prophets speak of a strength that can carry you when you are weak. It’s an inner strength God provides, and it’s available to you!

Why Do We Buy That? – Laughed At
    Matthew 6:16-24
“Come on, try it!” “Everyone’s doing it!” “Are you scared?” Our desire to fit in–and above all else not to be laughed at–is one of our most powerful motivators. Commercials know this and really leverage this cultural power against us. But Jesus says we need to be ready to be considered fools if we want to have true joy. Come this Sunday to gain resolve to stay on the path of life, no matter the hecklers!

Why Do We Buy That? – Who are you?
    John 6:26-71
What do you find really satisfying? As you reflect on your life, do you find yourself running from thing to thing to find value and happiness? Are you growing weary of constantly seeking? Jesus said only He can satisfy your inner craving. Come this Sunday to discover how you can give Him a try to bring you inner wholeness.

Why Do We Buy That? – Jumping in Scum
    Matthew 9:9-13
Why do commercials work on us? They offer satisfaction, meaning, and value in something we can buy. But we know better! Only Jesus offers the path of truly abundant life. Pastor David is back in September and will lead with a message series using commercial ads, “Why Do You Buy That?” We’ll uncover the ways we lose our focus amid the swirling media of advertising. We’ll expose our vulnerability to temptation, and we’ll get grounded again what really satisfies all the deep, inner longings of life. Our world creates a never-ending cycle of always needing that one more thing to be accepted or happy. Our church (Religion) tells us we just need to do that one more thing to be good enough. Jesus just says come! We “buy” this because we realize that we really are scum! Commercials prick this realization. Yet the answer isn’t buying their product, it’s turning to Jesus.

    The Race Ahead
This Sunday is graduation Sunday! We have six high school graduates and one college graduate. Besides celebrating them, this is a time for us to remember our calling to pass on the faith to the next generations. Others have shared Jesus with us. Because of that, we can embrace Him in our lives and experience abundant and eternal life. We, now, in turn, share Jesus with others. Our Christian lives are like a relay race! This Sunday we’ll be equipped to run our “leg” of the race!

The Lord’s Spirit Began to Move
    Series: Samson
The story of Samson ends with a big crash, which also ends his life. The mighty Samson found himself helpless as a result of his own foolishness. Yet, in desperation, he prayed, “Remember me, O Lord!” The true hero of the Samson story is actually God, who answers Samson’s prayer. God is still our true hero, for He still answers our desperate prayers. Although Samson reminds us of how we fall short of God’s plans for our lives, he also becomes a vivid testimony to make God our Hero!

    The Anti-Hero
    Series: Samson
We might remember Samson as the strong man of the Bible who did many amazing feats of strength. Yet we may not always remember just how badly he failed at following God’s calling on his life. God blessed him with special gifts, but he often used them for selfish reasons. What does God do with people like that? What does God do with people like us who are like that? This Sunday we’ll hear how God used Samson–failings and all–and how this is also true for how God still uses us!

    The Mother Without a Name
    Series: Samson
This Sunday, Mother’s Day, we begin our spring message series on Samson, the confusing strong man of the Bible. One quarter of the Samson story is actually about his mother! Samson, throughout his life, has four involved relationships with women. The first is the loving mother who raised him. She is the example of a faithful, godly woman. The other relationships Samson has with women fail miserably. So we begin with his mother, and our mothers. How has your mother been a godly example and witness?

    Thresholds: EscapeTomb
    Series: Thresholds
Thresholds in the Bible climax at Jesus’ tomb. On Friday, our worship service will mark the solemn death and burial of Jesus. He is laid in a tomb, and the entrance is sealed with a large stone. This shows us the weighty reality of sin and death; this is what we face! But then, on Easter, that tomb entrance is broken open, and the entrance becomes an exit. Jesus worked the first “escape tomb” miracle! And ever since then, He comes to us to lead us out of the tomb, the grave, in which we are trapped. Because of Jesus, we can escape death!

    Thresholds: The Gate of Sacrifice
    Series: Thresholds
This Sunday is Palm Sunday! We will wave palm branches in worship as a way for us to join the parade that greeted Jesus when He came into Jerusalem. It will be fun for the whole family! Yet there are dark clouds overhead: there’s a “storm” of betrayal and condemnation looming. Jesus, whom we greet with praise, will be crucified by Friday. Our service will also have this mixed message. We’ll hear how Jesus is the Gate to life and peace for us, His sheep, but we’ll also hear how Jesus earns this for us by laying down His life for His sheep.  Come join the parade this Sunday, but also notice the threatening clouds overhead.

    Thresholds: Your Heart’s Door
    Series: Thresholds
Do you hear that knocking? We can usually hear it best when all is quiet and we are alone. It’s that inner calling, tapping. Isn’t there more in life? Doesn’t my life have value...meaning? Isn’t there more to reality then what I can see? That’s Jesus knocking at your heart’s door. This is the next threshold in our Lenten message series. This Sunday we’ll listen to that knocking and learn how to open our heart’s doors to Jesus!

    Thresholds: Door of Separation
    Series: Thresholds
Does God feel distant? Does it seem sometimes like He’s not near? The Bible shows us over and over again that God never leaves us. It is we who leave Him! Yet even when we walk away, God comes after us, chasing us down, finding ways of being with us and restoring our connection to Him. This Sunday we’ll look at the Old Testament system of sacrifice and the temple to see what lengths God has always gone to restore us back to Him.

    Thresholds: Door of Decision
    Series: Thresholds
Doors often represent a choice: do we go through or not? The next threshold in the Biblical story is the door frame in the Passover story. The Israelites are slaves in Egypt. God promises to set them free. Yet they must trust in God’s protection, and show that trust in a strange act of obedience: They must make a sacrifice and spread the blood of the lamb on their doorposts. Those that did were spared death and set free! This Sunday we’ll learn how Jesus became our Passover Lamb. Our “Door of Decision” is if we will trust in Him and live in obedience, even when the calling is strange.

    Door of God’s Protection
    Series: Thresholds
We are following the overall story of the Bible, and we are telling the story by the thresholds we see. Sin brings death and destruction. In the Bible, Adam and Eve’s defiance of God leads to a closed door to Paradise and a sin-corrupted world rampant with death and destruction. The flood washes the earth, but Noah and his family are spared on the ark. When the rains came, God closed them in by shutting the ark’s door. This sign shows God’s saving grace: God provides a door of protection for us! Come this Sunday to hear how God provides a door of protection as you face destruction, death, and the storms of life.

    Disciples Make…A Difference
This is the last of our Disciples Make message series, and we end strong...and visible! Being a disciple of Jesus is an inner journey of surrendering your selfishness. Yet it is also an outward journey into the world. Disciples make a difference in concrete, visible ways in their. This Sunday we’ll be commissioned to serve others in visible ways in our everyday lives.
